The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation launched Bold Solutions to Re-Engage two years ago in search of answers to an urgent question: what could educational institutions and nonprofit organizations do to successfully reconnect young adults to college pathways?
In this learning brief, published in August, we attempted to capture what Petrie's grantees learned over the course of their projects, as well as to explore some of the drivers that deterred young New Yorkers from pursuing higher education and/or contributed to their stopping out. My hope is that this will add to our collective understanding in this vital area and help focus policymakers in government, higher education, and the larger community on the importance of well supported secondary to postsecondary transitions and interventions that address the needs and concerns of prospective students.
Huge thanks to all the grantees that shared their time and thoughts, the delightful young people I got to speak with as part of the research, and Cass Conrad, Desiree Vazquez Barlatt and the team at Petrie for inviting me to work on this important project.
